On Saturday the local HMGS-South group played a dark age skirmish game using SAGA rules at the Dogs of War shop. This game was hastily arranged when the original game plans went awry. Three groups of Vikings (10 units) faced three groups of Saxons (10 units). Each group was led by a warlord and played by one of the six players. The SAGA dice were rolled for each side and divided among the groups by consensus. While there were usually enough activation dice to move all the units, once combat began units often had to be left inactive. The goal for the raiding Vikings was to break through the Saxons and return to their ships.
- Vikings leave the village and head back to their ships while Saxons gather their forces.
- The mid-game Viking plan. Maneuver to prevent the Saxons from forming a solid shield wall. Attack on the right flank.
- The Saxons make the first attack.
- The Saxon attack is repulsed.
- Several units are lost on each side. The Saxons move to prevent a breakthrough on their left.
- The Saxons on their left are reduced to a couple of warriors and a levy unit. On their right, a Saxon levy unit is destroyed.
In the end, with two Saxon warlords dead, the Vikings will reach their ships. They will, however, be dividing the loot among far fewer people.
